on avoiding job losses

Press Release Body: Companies are being urged to cut their cloth with a few simple
steps to avoid redundancies during the credit squeeze.
A human resources firm, which is seeing a massive increase in the number of calls
relating to redundancies, says the money saved by axing jobs could be met with less
radical measures.
Julie Parsons, Director of Jaluch, which has offices in Reading and Ringwood, said:
"Local companies are feeling the pinch of the credit crunch and the hangover is
likely to last for up to a couple of years but in the long-term redundancy could do
more damage.
"There's a lot to be said for retaining skills and experience, for keeping staff
morale high by retaining jobs and by reassuring workers that you have their best
interests at heart. Avoiding redundancy also helps to keep productivity high and can
force you into working more efficiently."
Jaluch, which produces a series of management pocketbooks, has come up with 10 ways
of avoiding redundancies. They include reducing or stopping overtime, monitoring day
to day expenses and petty cash and reducing business-related travel.
Other tips include freezing recruitment, letting temporary positions go, offering
unpaid leave to staff for holidays during quiet times and changing working hours.
Julie added: "Now is the time to keep a close eye on debtors and ensure frequent
staff absence is investigated. It's also a good idea to consider whether staff
skills could be used to drive forward other areas of the business.
"Redundancy can be hugely stressful and there are plenty of pitfalls, the cost of
making a redundancy can also be high and the costs of getting it wrong are even
higher. Many of the companies we speak to find making savings in a few key areas
adds up to saving valued-jobs."
